Week 5 : RSS and Feed Readers

Week 5 was a challenge for me. I picked google reader because I don't like to get a lot of accounts with different sign ups and passwords.
I could not pick anything I was interested in. I finally subscribed to :
Cara's 23 things blog, Marilyn's 23 things blog, healthy recipes for better nutrition and weight loss, national and local weather.

Week 4 : Photo sharing

This was a very interesting lesson.
Marilyn and I went to Osborne workshop for Flickr and Facebook. Of course, computers weren't cooperating but we had fun and learned alot.
I made a Facebook page for GBPL, stole some photos from Marilyn and posted them. I chose Picasa instead of Flickr on Cara's recommendation.

Week 3 : Online Meetings

I am excited about online seminars as I don't get a lot of opportunity to travel for my job.

I chose an archive of Kansas tax forms webinar from WebJunction. It was presented by Andy Coultis and Carl York, Kansas Department of Revenue with Laura DeBaun as web monitor.

I thought the presentation was excessively long and in more detail than we as librarians needed. Although it was helpful as a tax preparer, lots of information given. I liked being able to stop & start as we could find time to watch.

I really see a future use for webinars. I think they will be greatly used in the future as we in Central Kansas have a hard time trying to attended seminars.

Week 2 : Online Community

I chose Facebook. I have family and friends using facebook so thought I would stay with one everyone uses. I do like to keep in touch with people and reading their posts although I don't really post much. I would like to more in future but where is the time?

I did go in and change some of my privacy issues. It is hard to know how much information you want to be out in the world.

Recently I had a family member pass away rather than keep calling to find out obituary information. I got on their facebook page and they had posted all the information I needed to know. I also am very nosey so like to keep track of friends and what is happening in their lives.

I signed up to be a friend of the state library. I had a son killed by a drunk driver so have signed up with Mothers Against Drunk Drivers and also Compassionate Friends as a group member. Already was a member of 23 Things Kansas

I believe the library could use facebook as a good source to inform people in our community of what is happening. It seems to be the most popular right now.

Week 1: blogging

Hi my name is Romona Newsome. I work for the Great Bend Public Library and have been here for 19 years. I started as a circulation clerk, then assistant to Marilyn Malbrough, circulation Department Head, moved to Reference for about a year, and now have been Technical Services Department Head for 9 years. I am not very computer literate so need all the help I can get. I want to be able to help patrons with all the new technology.
I was a little afraid to tackle this assignment but with Cara Negaard helping we are on our way...
